Our Products and How we Work

Motif Stone Creations designs and fabricates beautiful stone products that are hand-made from the finest quality materials sourced from around the world. Each piece is hand cut and hand patterned into exquisite designs with meticulous craftsmanship. The hand-made process lends itself to natural variations due to the irregularity of stone and human production as compared to the precision of mechanical fabrication and mass production. Irregularities in natural stone include color, veining, dry seams, voids, fossil holes, quartz veins, unevenness, and grain movement. Tumbled products can show differing amounts of chipping on the edges of each piece. Non-tumbled (polished or honed) products show “chatter” (slight chipping from the action of the blade when cutting) on any and all edges. We strive to produce products that are “alike,” but no two pieces will be identical. It is important to understand that variation in stone products is natural and not a defect. In fact, natural variations often enhance the beauty and uniqueness of the piece.

All pieces of liners, mosaics and medallions are cut from standard 12”x 12” materials (3/8” thickness) chosen by our customers. Joints can vary up to 3/32”. Thickness variation in 12”x 12” stock material is a by-product of cutting at the material factory rather than a result of the medallion fabrication process. Since we have our own manufacturing facility, we can provide replacement pieces upon request. Installation of our products should always be performed by a licensed, experienced contractor in compliance with the Tile Council of America (TCA) Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation 2003 (www.tileusa.com).

We offer an innovative in-stock line of high quality hand-made natural stone medallions available for immediate shipping. We stock a wide range of our most popular designs with a choice of various colors, shapes, and sizes. All of our stock products come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied with one of our stock products, just return the product for a full refund. To purchase one of our in-stock products, just visit our online store.

We also provide our customers with the ability to customize any of our in-stock products by changing the material/finish (e.g., polished vs. unpolished, honed, tumbled), size and shape. Through our Rapid Response Customization service we offer our customers quick turnaround on the customization of any of our in-stock products. In addition, we can work with our customers to create a completely new design or commissioned natural stone art piece. We can capture almost any image in stone- from logos, flowers, landscapes, and architectural renditions to surfboards, classic automobiles, and pets. We are only limited by your imagination. A commissioned natural stone art piece can represent a sound investment and not only adds a stunning personal touch to a home or commercial project, but it can serve as an enduring legacy and creative signature for almost any project.

In creating a custom stone medallion, we will work with you to choose the type of product, determine the shape (e.g., circle, square, capsule) and size of the medallion, specify the details of the individual pieces in the design, and choose the materials to be used, such as stone, glass, tile, wood, brick, etc. We work with our customers to establish an initial budget for custom projects and continue to evaluate cost and design tradeoffs throughout the process to ensure our customer’s needs are being met. In general, the more detail in the stone medallion, the higher the cost.

On any commissioned piece or custom project, we offer our experience in choosing the best materials for a particular environment so that the piece can be built in a manner that structurally lasts. We also provide guidance on the most effective approach to installation. We have worked on projects from start to finish that others thought could not be done. We advise our customers on which materials are best suited to function and last in outdoor environments, which are best for pools or fountains, which hold up best in high traffic environments such as entryways, and which are the best choices for enduring heat behind a gas cook top. Whatever the pattern or design, with the proper bonding method and installation process, our products can be used anywhere commercially or residentially.

Our Capabilities

Motif Stone Creations offers a comprehensive set of design, consulting, manufacturing, warehousing/logistics, and installation services to meet the full range of needs of our customers.

Design Capabilities

Our in-house team of graphic and industrial designers includes design talent from the US, Europe, and Asia. Our design team combines decades of experience in traditional design of natural stone products with state-of-the-art computerized design using programs such as SolidWorks, Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. In addition to their own creative inspiration, our designers leverage our extensive design library that includes hundreds of natural stone designs developed over the past 15 years. We offer a complete set of design services from initial concept creation to detailed mechanical drawings and photo-realistic renderings through prototype development and production. Our approach allows for real-time design changes and integration with production software for selected components.

Consulting Services

Our deep expertise in geology, design, manufacturing, and installation enable us to provide an integrated set of consulting services to our natural stone customers. We understand the structural and chemical properties of different stones and can advise our customers on which stones are physically suited to a particular job. Furthermore, we understand the nuances of installation and the importance of using structurally sound surfaces for optimal product adherence as well as the value of using skilled and experienced installers to ensure high quality installations.

From a design and manufacturing perspective, we work closely with our clients on custom projects, advising them on choosing patterns that work with the right materials (including stone, glass, tile, wood, brick, etc.) combined in the right way so they stick together, look beautiful, and can be installed quickly and properly by any contractor or even a homeowner. In addition to providing technical expertise, we also assist our customers in setting and achieving project budgets and managing projects to achieve desired timelines. Our experienced craftsman understand the complete process from design to installation of a project and can anticipate problems in advance to save our customers money and avoid time delays.

Manufacturing

Our domestic manufacturing operation is housed in a shared 47,000 square foot building in Oceanside, CA designed for light manufacturing, distribution, and office work. We import the highest quality natural stone materials from around the world and utilize our fully-equipped stonework shop and experienced craftsmen to create beautiful hand-made works of art for our customers. All of our finished products are installation-ready and come complete with a highly durable proprietary mesh backing system to preserve pattern integrity and facilitate ease of installation. Our manufacturing operation is designed to efficiently manufacture our stock line of stone medallions as well as provide Rapid Response Customization services for our clients who have custom projects that require quick turnaround times. We couple our domestic manufacturing capabilities with our strong overseas manufacturing and sourcing capabilities, which together enable us to manufacture high quality stone components or finished pieces at highly competitive prices. The combination of domestic and overseas manufacturing capabilities help us provide our customers with a global supply chain solution that offers maximum flexibility, consistent quality, ultimate affordability.

When we work with our customers to design and manufacture a unique, custom natural stone product, we keep the computerized drawings and templates in our library. If a customer decides to expand a project at a later date, the items can be seamlessly matched and fabricated. For customers who wish to produce a newly designed product on a large scale, we utilize the same procedures and techniques for mass production as we use for prototyping and short runs. The precision of all cuts on pieces large and small is 3/32”, which is equivalent to the left or right side of a saw blade. Our hand-made craftsmanship is so precise that it is often confused with products that are manufactured on a water jet machine.

One of the distinctive features of our hand-made stone medallions is the minimal amount of grout space between pieces of stone. From an aesthetic point of view, there is an enormous difference in perceived quality of a finished stone medallion with minimal exposed grout area compared to a medallion where there are obvious gaps between the stone pieces and more visible grout area. Medallions with minimal grout area can only be achieved on a consistent basis with meticulous craftsmanship and years of experience.

Warehousing and Logistics

Our highly flexible manufacturing, warehousing, and logistics facility provides an ideal set-up for managing everything from simple one-time custom projects to sophisticated retail programs involving regular shipments to regional distribution centers or drop shipments to individual retail stores or design centers. With 26-ft. high clear height, 12 dock doors, top-of-the-line pallet racking, and electronic security system, our facility is well equipped to meet the program management needs of our regional and national customers. In addition, we have significant international logistics management experience that enables us to handle programs involving international distribution.

Installation

Our team of highly experienced installers are available to assist our customers with complete installation at the job site. No job is too small or too large. We have a vested interest in ensuring our works of art are properly and cost effectively installed because we know that the final installed end product is ultimately what drives customer satisfaction. Our installation experts have installed our products in residential homes and pools, commercial buildings, restaurants, shopping malls, and a variety of other locations. Our team is particularly skilled at finding ways to accomplish “hard-to-install” projects.

Our History

Thirty years ago a geologist named Jeff Stewart came home from 4 months at sea after conducting a geophysical survey of the Gulf of Mexico to determine where to drill for oil. That weekend he helped a friend remodel his bathroom. It was the first cut of stone that proved to be the defining moment for Jeff who subsequently launched a 30-year career in designing, manufacturing, and installing hand-made natural stone artistry.

After receiving his contractor’s license, Jeff spent the first 15 years learning how to properly install all types of stone products. He quickly became a recognized industry leader in “hard to install” projects. Combining his background in geology with his practical expertise and knowledge of the industry, Jeff was frequently called upon as an expert witness in legal cases involving proper installation of natural stone products. For the past 15 years, Jeff has owned and operated Rock N’ Roll Tumbled Stone, a designer and manufacturer of unique, difficult-to-produce stone products for the residential and commercial markets. In September of 2009, the company merged with RICH LTD., a 22-year old merchandising solutions company with international manufacturing, marketing, distribution, and supply chain management expertise.
